Many athletes spend their off-season training to get bigger, faster and stronger, but the real question is how do we address the in-season? For most athletes this is the longest season, the time where they are practicing 4-6 times per week and competing in games. You don’t want to lose the gains you have spent the off-season and preseason working hard to gain. So the idea is to get into the weight room 1-2 times per week for the basic lifts. We at XP preach to our athletes the importance of maintaining your strength so that when you get to the next off-season you can continue to get stronger, not trying to get back to what you were doing last year.
The tough part is trying to fit the workout(s) in and still leave the athletes time to do homework and to rest and recuperate. Never an easy task but doable. We encourage athletes to come in before school, for a quick 5-7 different exercises of 1 set. Get in and get out, taking roughly 20-30 minutes to complete. Also, if you are not strength training during the season you are losing strength and muscle, which will make you more vulnerable to injuries.
